Landwehr, Romeyn de Hooghe, n° 30 ; Hofer, Baroque Book Illustration, 140.
First edition of the account of the retreat of the Duke of Luxembourg’s army, which was forced to leave Holland by the thaw after a victorious march to The Hague.
The author, Abraham de Wicquefort (1606-1682), describes the atrocities committed by the French troops and urges the Dutch to resist.
The work is illustrated with 10 etchings by Romain de Hooghe (1645-1708) printed on eight double pages. All plates are in first proof, before the numbers. Preceded in this type of exercise by Jacques Callot (1592-1635) with the Misères de la guerre, de Hooghe delivers here one of his most famous series of engravings, depicting the atrocities of war. They depict scenes of looting, exactions and rapes perpetrated on civilians by soldiers and officers of Louis XIV’s army in Bodegrave, Swammerdam, and other Dutch localities.
A fine copy.
