The Dictionnaire philosophique portatif was published at a time of great tension. The Encyclopaedists were mocked at the Comédie française by Palissot, and then the cases concerning Protestants, in particular that of the pastor La Rochette, the death of the son Calas and the escape of Sirven, broke out.

Voltaire ended up proposing a work bringing together his philosophical, moral, political and above all religious ideas. The Dictionnaire portatif quickly caused such a scandal that it was burnt at the stake several times : "Le Dictionnaire philosophique, brûlé à Genève par la main du bourreau, le 26 septembre 1764, fut condamné par arrêt du Parlement de Paris, du 19 mars, et par décret de la cour de Rome, du 8 juillet 1765. On sait qu'en 1966, lors du supplice du chevalier de La Barre, le Dictionnaire philosophique, qu'on avait trouvé dans sa bibliothèque, fut livré aux flammes en même temps que les restes mutilés du malheureux chevalier."
