First edition “quite rare and much sought after ” (see Clouzot).

Servitude et grandeur militaires is a collection of three short stories: ‘Laurette ou le Cachet rouge’, ‘La Veillée de Vincennes’ and ‘La Vie et la Mort du capitaine Renaud, ou la Canne de jonc’. They were first published in La Revue des Deux Mondes from 1833 to 1835.

When it was published by Bonnaire et Magen, Vigny added an introduction and a conclusion in which the author spoke of the military condition and the status of a soldier. This is a composite work in which the author portrays himself at different times in his military career. He mixes historical facts, personal memories and fiction. Vigny weaves the link between soldier and poet throughout the three short stories.

Some spotting, pages 101 and 277 torn but missing no text, paper default in the upper margin of page 383.
