Lagrange (1786-1813) took part in the creation of the Ecole Polytechnique, provisionally named Ecole Centrale des Travaux Publics, where he was the first professor of analysis. Napoleon I appointed him, along with Monge and Laplace, to the Conservative Senate. In this work, he attempted to eliminate the Leibnizian notion of infinities and the Newtonian notion of limit. Gilded prize inscription on first cover: “Ecole Centrale du département de la Loire Inférieure. Prix de l’An dix”.
A fine copy, slight wear to head of spine.
