With an account of a slave revolt in Gorée

Gay 2914 ; Monglond, I, 468.

First edition.

The author (1720-1802), who initially worked for the Compagnie des Indes, spent more than twenty years in the various French establishments on the Senegal coast, and was a member of the Sovereign Council of Senegal. In this work, he speaks out against “the barbarity of this infamous trade” in slaves, which he practised himself and describes in detail.

Pp. 101 to 113 contain an account of one of the most important slave revolts of the eighteenth century, that of Gorée, in which Pruneau de Pommegorge was one of the participants. This excellent account, illustrated with 9 maps and plates (including the Ceremony of the Anniversary of the Death of the Father of the King of the Dahomets), is full of valuable information on the customs and trade of the regions visited; it ends with a small dictionary of the Jolof language.

A pleasant copy.

Some light foxing (especially on the verso of the plates), stamp of the Bibliothèque de géographie des éditions Hachette on the title.
