First edition.

Jean Henri Jaume Saint-Hilaire (1772-1845), a naturalist and plant illustrator, published his first major work in 1805, Exposition des familles naturelles et de la germination des plantes, in which he promoted the classification given by Antoine-Laurent de Jussieu. A gifted draughtsman, Jaume Saint-Hilaire was introduced to this art by the famous painter Gérard van Spaendonck.

This beautiful work on the plants of France is illustrated with 400 engraved plates, printed in colour à la poupée. Publication was stopped and it was ten years later that Jaume Saint-Hilaire took over this work and completed it between 1819 and 1822 with 6 additional volumes, to which was added a second printing of the first 4 volumes.

A very good copy, with expertly restored bindings.
