Extremely rare copy on large paper in large 4to format

O’Reilly, 373 ; Forbes, 277 ; voir Hill, 1308 (first edition of 1773).

First edition of the French translation by Pierre-François Henry.

This journal was published by the author’s brother, in the same year as Cook’s first voyage. “Parkinson was a naturalist draughtsman on board the Endeavour. He died in Batavia in 1771” (O’Reilly). This translation also contains details of Cook’s third and last voyage and his tragic death.

“Parkinson’s account of the second voyage ends in Volume II and is followed by an account of Cook’s third voyage and death. The Turnbull Library has a large paper copy of this (253 x 200 mm)” (Forbes).

A fine copy on large paper.

Spine of binding skilfully restored.

Provenance: General Vaudable (bookplate).
