This vast encyclopaedia was very much in vogue at the end of the 16th century and throughout the 17th century. It contains observations on medical subjects such as eyesight, sleep, the damage caused by wine – but also on vines and the art of making wine – the virtues of ants, as well as curious anecdotes on the most bizarre subjects: the Knights Templar, the Guelphs and Ghibellines, the Sybils, the zodiac, church bells conjuring devils, magic rings, the virtues of precious stones, astrologers, printing, etc.
The author, Pedro Mexia (born in Seville in 1496) was appreciated by Charles V because of his deep erudition.
