Elected member of the Royal Society in 1719, MacLaurin was awarded in 1740, jointly with Leonhard Euler and Daniel Bernoulli, the price of the Académie des Sciences for their work on tides. The book was posthumously published in 1748 and also contains a lengthy biographical note.
