First edition of the French translation.
It is dedicated to the Duc de Broglie, President of the Society for the Abolition of Slavery. Zachary Macaulay (1768-1838) was, along with William Wilberforce, a leading figure in the Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade, and one of the principal figures in the public campaign against the slave trade. This collection of English documents on emancipation was intended to dispel the fears caused by “false accounts… of the disastrous consequences” of the abolition of slavery, recently abolished on 1 August 1834.
