François L’Hermite (1601-1655), known as Tristan, led a very turbulent life from his youth. Page of Henry of Bourbon, he fought a duel at the age of thirteen, during which he killed his opponent. First a refugee in England, he then found himself in Norway. Returning to France, he was first welcomed by Scévole de Sainte-Marthe in Poitiers, he then entered the service of the Duke of Mayenne before joining the service of Gaston d’Orléans whom he accompanied to Lorraine then to Flanders .
“It was in Antwerp that in 1633, he published The Complaints of Acante. It was very successful…He was a poet, knew how to analyze all the delicacies of love, and in the history of thought French, he was one of the first to demonstrate a fairly lively feeling for nature” (see Grente).
A highly appreciated playwright of his time, he was considered a rival of Corneille by his contemporaries.
The edition contains the following plays : La Belle recluse ; La Vieille layde ; L’Amour honneste ; Le Doute amoureux ; La Nuict amoureuse ; L’Inquiétude amoureuse ; Les Soupirs de Silvie ; Caprice burlesques ; Orphée aux enfers ; L’Aurore du bois de Vincennes.
Very handsome copy, well established by Niédrée, who inadvertently bound a duplicate of pages 97-100.
