Atabey, 613.
First edition.
Jaubert, who had studied oriental languages, was chosen as an interpreter attached to the Egyptian army. Returning to France with Bonaparte, he was sent to Constantinople, then to Persia, “where he reached Tehran with difficulty after being arrested by Bayazid’s pasha and thrown into a dry cistern where he remained for three months” (see Tulard).
His work is illustrated with a fine map and charming lithographs.
A pleasantly bound copy, with a few rare brown spots. Map with skilfully restored tear.
