A copy that belonged to the young Stéphane Mallarmé.
The writer signed each volume in blue ink: the flyleaf of volume I is signed ‘S. Mallarmé’, the half-title of volume II bears the signature ’S. Mallarmé’ accompanied by the date “Août 1860”.
Strongly influenced by writers such as Banville, Baudelaire, Hugo, Verlaine and Zola, he also frequented artists such as Édouard Manet, who painted a portrait of the writer and poet in 1876.
His first poems, written during his studies at the Lycée Impérial in Sens between 1859 and 1860 under the title Entre quatre murs, were greatly influenced by the writings of Hugo and Baudelaire, whose Les Fleurs du Mal he discovered in 1860.
