Emmanuel Guillaume-Rey (1837-1916), born in Chaumont and died in Chartres, was an eminent French archaeologist, topographer and Orientalist. Fluent in Arabic, he made his first trip to the Orient in Syria in 1857. Following this trip, he was admitted to the Fondation de l’œuvre des Écoles d’Orient where he was a member of the board of directors from 1858 until his death in 1916.
Thanks to his scientific, topographical and historical research, he is considered today as the founder of the archaeology of the crusades.
Guillaume-Rey was responsible for the restoration of the Dome of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. He undertook extensive travels in Palestine, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon, and visited with his companions (Dr Delbet, Prince Lubomirski and Father Ratisbonne) practically all the villages of the Hawran district (nearly 350 towns and villages). This text provides a chronological account of the journey in this region south of Damascus. In his essay he also discusses French rule in Syria at the time of the Crusade. The plates of the atlas represent the views, plans, and archaeological sites visited.
The two maps, usually bound in the text volume, are here inserted on a single large sheet of the atlas which thus comprises 27 (and not 26 as announced on the index sheet).
