Collection of 44 copper engravings from the 17th century, preceded by a handwritten title.
Most of the prints published by François Guérard, and probably engraved by Nicolas Guérard or J. Lagniet, belong to thematic suites.
Of particular interest is the suite of 6 plates on Japanese and Chinese customs, followed by a plate on Siam, published by Langlois.
Until then, in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, there was little in the way of "intimacy" in prints: it was always the emblematic and allegorical side that dominated. With Lagniet, we plunge into the everyday world.
Details of the suites: Vie rustique (17); Mœurs et coutumes des Asiatiques (7); Portraits des empereurs romains (12); Fables de l'antiquité (8).
Some plates with tears or missing white margins restored.
