New edition and enlarged edition, based on the one printed in 1536. The printing privileg for this editin was shared between three printers, notably D. Janot, J. Petit, and F. Regnault.
The illustration includes a repeated woodcut border (the typographical title of the first part is printed in red and black) by G. de Gourmont with his initials in the matrix. A large woodcut at the beginning of the text and two genealogical trees complete the iconography.
Nicole Gilles (1425-1503) was a French historiographer. He is known to have been royal secretary in February 1475. He soon became associated with the Parisian printer and bookseller Antoine Vérard. Written in the 1490s, it provides a history of the French monarchy from its Trojan origins to the reign of Louis XI. First published posthumously in 1525, the Annalles was a highly successful work and went through number of editions. Jean Bouchet completed Nicole Gilles’ account up to 1519. Gilles is credited with coining the expression “the Hundred Years’ War” to describe the “memory of the war against England”.
Copy complete with the last leaf of the table for the second part. This leaf, slightly shorter in the margin and probably supplied from another copy, is not mentioned in Bechtel’s erroneous collation which gives only 4 nn.ll., and 142 num.ll. A good copy.
