Renouard, Estienne, 125:5; Schreiber, 156.
First edition. This is Henri Estienne’s first book written in the vernacular and it is part of a trilogy of works on the defence of French prose (the others are: Deux dialogues du nouveau langage françois, Geneva 1578, and Project du livre intitulé de la Precellence du langage françois, Paris 1579).
“In the present work Henri claims the superiority of the French over all other languages, except Greek, which, according to him, is the most perfect language and which French most resembles” (Schreiber).
