Hill, 481.

First edition of the French translation of this important travel account of an Irish man into the South Sea, particularly important for the description of the place were Lapérouse and his crew shipwrecked in 1788.

The fine lithographed plates by Engelman plates depict 2 views (frontispieces), a pirogue, and the island of Vanikoro).

“Dillon was engaged in the sandalwood trade between the West Pacific islands and China, and between 1822 and 1825 was employed in the timber trade for the East India market. Returning to Tikopia in 1826 with his ship St Patrick, en route from Chile to India, he was offered a sword of French manufacture, evidently from the wreck of La Pérouse’s ships” (Howgego).

Some occasional foxing, else a fine copy, well preserved in its original wrappers.
