Garrison-Morton, 5580; Wellcome, II, 452; see Heirs of Hippocrates, 1053 (1803 edition) & Waller, 2373.

Third edition of volume III, revised and enlarged, given by Bichat, who had been Desault’s pupil. The first 2 volumes in second, revised edition.

The great surgeon Pierre-Joseph Desault (1744-1795) was one of the first professors at the École Pratique de Chirurgie in Paris.

“He made many suggestions regarding the treatment of fractures and dislocations and is one of the founders of modern vascular surgery” (Garrison-Morton).

He was an innovator in the treatment of aneurysms (G.M., 2927), and was also one of the pioneers of urological surgery “and was one of the first to have a clear understanding of urological disease” (G.M., 4165.02).

The third volume, devoted to the latter subject, was expanded after Bichat’s death by Ph.J.Roux with various memoirs, including one on Avenbrugger’s method of percussion, entitled : Mémoire sur l’application comparée de la Percussion de la poitrine et de la Pression abdominale, pour la connoisssance des maladies aiguës et chroniques des organes de la poitrine.

Good copy albeit some foxing.
