Landwehr, Roman, 197 (for the Vita, indicating an undated edition ; the engravings are identical to the description) & Landwehr, Roman, 199 ; Lugt, 599-625 (Lux Claustri) & 626-652 (Vita).
Fine collection of two important sets of engravings by Jacques Callot (1592-1635) with the images in their final state with numbers.
Each plate is printed on the rectos only on paperstock with a watermark of a little tower (see Lugt, filigranes, 54). Each engraving has its Latin mottto, followed by the French translation “qui, sans être une traduction exacte, donnent le sens des vers latins” (Lugt).
Fine bibliophilic provenance
This copy had belonged to Jean-Jacques de Bure. It bears his signed autograph note on the front paste-down “Collationné, complet le 9 décembre 1797, j.j. de Bure fils aîné.” It was included in the Marie-Jacques de Bure auction sale (Paris, March 1849, lot 392).
