Dibner, 21 (for the first edition London 1672 ); Pritzel, 3354. Not in Stafleu-Cowan and Hunt.

Grew was one of the pioneers of plant anatomy, highlighting the sexual organs of flowers (calyx, stamens, pistil and pollen), examining the external morphology of plants and describing cell structure.

“Trained as a physician, Grew observed the similarity of parts and functions between the plants and animals. His most important contribution to botany was his belief that the flower contains the sexual organ of a plant. He distinguished the calyx, stamens and pistils, and that the anthers scatter pollen” (Dibner).

French edition, to which the publisher has appended the Ame des plantes by Dedu, and a Recueil d’expériences et observations curieuses qui procède du mélange des corps sur les saveurs et sur les odeurs, by Grew and Boyle, each part with a separate title.

A fine copy.
