Born in Marseille in 1809, Ernest Alby was a naval ensign who was taken prisoner during the campaign to conquer Algeria. His astonishing account was published in Paris in 1837 under the pseudonym A. de France, with the definitive title : Les Prisonniers d’Abd-el-Kader, ou Cinq mois de captivité chez les Arabes.
The author appears under his pseudonym: “Abd-el-Kader fit appeler de France, décacheta devant lui avec beaucoup de précaution les lettres du général de Létang et ordonna au prisonnier de les lui lire à haute voix”.
The author has divided his text into chapters, inserting handwritten titles and table, and adding corrections to the text and sometimes entire paragraphs.
