Of the eleven studies in this book, two are devoted to fossil man, the others to the Malays and Papuans, the inhabitants of Polynesia and Melanesia, Tasmania, the Maoris, the Todas, the Finns, etc. The 209 text-illustrations are taken from various anthropological works, or are reproductions of photographs collected by Janssen, Brau de Saint-Pol Lias, E. de La Croix, Montano, Pinart, Martelli, etc.

The fold-out map drawn by Hale in 1846 and revised here by Quatrefages shows the Polynesian migrations from their origin.
