Certificate for ‘Citizen Joseph Gambez, doctor of the Republic… military hospital of St-Pierre-Martinique has carried out his duties with great zeal… he has supported the true constitutional principles of the republican government adopted by France with a civic-mindedness free from any personal interest’.

Appointed lieutenant-general of the Leeward Islands in 1793, Donatien Rochambeau won several victories over the English allied with the Royalists. However, he had to surrender on 22 March 1794 in Saint-Pierre after a long siege, and this certificate was written five days before the surrender and is fully signed ‘Le 19 Mars vieux style – 29 ventôse An II de la république française une et indivisible”.

Traces of folding and splitting in the centre, small missing stamp.
