Soleinne, 1330.

First edition of this play performed at the Hôtel de Bourgogne.

In the preface, Villiers declares that he was encouraged to tackle the subject by the good reception given to his Festin de Pierre. The play depicts the misadventures of an apothecary, M. Robert, whose daughter is kidnapped by the young Lidamant, while he is beaten by two of his enemies. Robbed and beaten, the poor man goes to court and is sentenced to prison – the judges being none other than his executioners in disguise.

The last 5 pages are taken up by the poem Portrait d’une inconnue.

“Ne t’y trompe pas, je te puis asseurer que son nom & sa condition sont autant illustres, que sa personne est digne de vénération” (introduction).

A very good copy, carefully cleaned at the time of binding.
