Schwerdt, II, 156; Thiébaud, 836-839 ; Cohen, 952.
First and only edition.
“The book is composed of two poems, one on music and another which is entitled ‘Diane, ou les Loix de la Chasse du Cerf’, and based on Savary ‘Venationis Cervinae…. leges’, Caen 1659. At any rate it is free version thereof, although many new observations and reflections are introduced. This is followed by a dictionary of hunting terms, a musical play called ‘Nouvelle chasse du cerf’ and a treatise on hunting notes” (Schwerdt).
“Ce joli volume mérite d’être recherché non seulement pour ses illustrations, mais surtout parce qu’il est le premier volume qui contienne des fanfares, dont toutes celles du marquis de Dampierre, qui paraissent ici pour la première fois, et au complet” (Thiébaud).
The book is illustrated with 7 engravings by Le Bas of which 5 are after drawings by Oudry.
